The students of journalism are debated on the topic “Women politicians are more sensitive to environmental issues than male politicians” at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. The debate was organized within the project of the Novi Sad School of Journalism and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation named “Young women politicians for a healthy environment.” The students had previously participated in a roundtable where was discussed about the role of women, young politicians in the decision making process regarding the protection of the environment that took place on 18 April in the Novi Sad School of Journalism. At this event, they have collected information which helped in preparing their speeches for the debate.

In the Novi Sad School of Journalism was held a roundtable called ”Young politicians for a healthy environment”.

The aim of the roundtable was to present different environmental problems in Vojvodina and to present the ideas of the young female politician and candidates on the lists for the upcoming elections as possible solutions in terms of environmental protection.

On the round table was discussed about the importance of of citizen participation in solving environmental problems and how big is their environmental awareness, how much attention decision-makers devote to issues of environmental protection in times of economic crisis, why in the institutions that deal with environment dominate women, whether women politicians with their activism contribute to faster solution of the environmental problems etc.

The participants were young female politicians and candidates on electoral lists for the upcoming local and provincial elections from different political parties(Democratic Party, League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina and the Liberal Democratic Party) and the journalist Dragana Ratković which reports on environmental issues on the Radio Novi Sad, Višnja Baćanović sociologist and Theodora Knez Milojković representative of the organization Environmental Ambassadors who presented the work of the organization and highlight some of the most pressing environmental problems in Serbia.

Pre-election media monitoring

Just like in previous years, the Novi Sad School of Journalism is conducting a media monitoring during the pre-election campaign.
Media monitoring is one of the best tools for measuring the level of respecting the social role and professionalism of media, especially during the pre-election campaign which is the most sensitive and most critical period where influence of the media is huge because it can easily make an impact to the results of the elections thus the whole political, social and economical course the state will take on in the next four years.

Except the traditional electronic and printed media from the territory of whole Serbia, this time the web-pages of political parties that handed in the candidate lists on any of the three levels of government.

The „Pre-election media monitoring 2102“ project is supported by the Foundation for an Open Society and the Provincial Secretariat for Culture and Public Information. The project “Ladies Diary of Change” is supported by the European Commission.

Gordana Čomić: watch the world without prejudice

Parliament Deputy Speaker Gordana Čomic, yesterday gave a lecture on “Women in the political life of Serbia». This lecture was held as part of educational seminar of the internacional project “Ladies Diary of Change” held in the Novi Sad School of Journalism that is supported by European commision. 18 highschool girls from Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo will learn about the mechanisms of realization of the rights of women and on the use of media tools to promote their ideas. Ms Comic was talking about acitve woman in serbian parlament. As she said, it is very often that woman MPs in serbian parlament find common language on issues affecting all women in Serbia. Ms Čomic also said that the vote of some laws achieved a consensus among all women. She piont out Family Law as the act around which a consensus was reached among the woman MPs.

Ms Čomic spoke about stereotypes and prejudice, and noted the example “Think of the limits of your boxes.” Her advice is do not think participating in the framework of the box, do not even think outside the box. Act like any boxes or frames do not exist.

The project “Ladies Diary of Change” in the Novi Sad School of Journalism

As part of the international project “Ladies Diary of Change” in the Novi Sad School of Journalism was held its first seminar for the participants. In the period from 1st to 4th of April 18 participants from Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo will learn about the mechanisms of realization of the rights of women and about the use of media as a tool to promote their ideas. The seminar involved young high schoolgirls from Bajina Basta, Pirot, Novi Pazar, Novi Sad, Bar, Zabljak, Pristina and Kosovska Mitrovica along with their school profesors.This is for many of them an unique opportunity to meet with their peers from different parts of the region and exchange experiences with them. After the seminar in Novi Sad, participants will gather again at seminars in Podgorica and Pristina. Their work and learning on this project will be ended with the study visit to the Athens.

Djuric: subtitled programs in minority languages

Provincial Secretary for Culture and Information Milorad Djuric said today that multiculturalism in Vojvodina exists, but it does not mean quality, if there is no communication between different cultures.
Djuric said at the roundtable ”Media Culture” at the City Library that Radio-Television of Vojvodina (RTV) should consider the possibility of titling programs in languages of national minorities in the Serbian language.

He said that it would contribute to mutual communication between different cultures in Vojvodina.

Agnes Curcic-Asodi from the Novi Sad School of Journalism presented the results of the monitoring of RTV programmes that showed that the provincial public service satisfactorily covers the field of culture.

In the central news of TV Vojvodina, the Vojvodjanski dnevnik (Vojvodina daily news), cultural contents were present in 9% of the outputs, in the Novosti (News) programme of the Radio Novi Sad, 7% of outputs contained culture as content, the Hungarian TV central news – 12%, due to the research conducted in late October and beginning of November last year.

Curcic-Asodi said that culture is the most represented in radio and television programs in Romanian language.

Nemanja Cabric from the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) said that their study ”between prescribed and real - culture of the legal chaos” shows that laws that should regulate culture in Serbia are not applicable and relevant and some are still not passed.
“The state functions as a party state, where the culture is not recognized as an electoral asset. Culture in Serbia is actually seen as a cost, “said Cabric.

He said that a strong centralization of the state also affects on the development of culture, and that some media do not have enough cultural programmes and do not have analytical approach according to this field.

Round table “Culture in the media”

Novi Sad School of Journalism and the City library of Novi Sad are organising a round table titled “Culture in the media” that is supported by Provincial Secretariat for Culture and Public Information. This event will take place in the Reading Room of the City Library on Friday, 23 of March 2012 at 10 o’clock.

One of the main topics on this round table will be cooperation between cultural institutions and media, with emphasis on Public Service of Vojvodina. It is expected that the journalists participate in the discussion and tell about their experiences in the communication with the cultural institutions. Results of the media monitoring on culture in media that was done by the NSSJ will be presented on the round table as well as the research of the BIRN (Balkan Investigative Reporting Network) about media reporting of culture.

BBC seminar in Novi Sad School of Journalism

Experts from the BBC “World Service Trust” held training on “Support to media in the field of European integration” in the Novi Sad School of Journalism. Participants were journalists from local and regional media. First part of this program was from 12 until 16 of March. The whole group will participate on the second phase of this project. After this phase the best of the group will be selected to participate on the seminar that will be organized in Brussels.
